I trust it's purple?

Roger on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 21:23:53

Though rumour has it he has gone posh and joined the motorhomers... :-)

Coyote on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 20:28:55

Thanks Rog

Trev on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 18:52:15

Don't worry, Trev's bound to be there.

Roger on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 17:11:57

Thanks for the info Richard. Looks like I'll have to do the decent thing and camp as well, didn't want to be the only idiot in the paddock!

Justin on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 16:31:31

Pembrey grid capacity is 32. This site's "Schedule" shows 28 Supers and 30 Megas as "definite". Max prediction for Megas is 32, and Supers also seem unlikely to exceed 32. So I'm 99.something% certain that we won't need any qualifying races,

Nick Frost chair on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 12:27:14

Talking of that fine circuit Pembrey do we now have a full list of entrants because last time I looked it seemed close to a qualy race.

Steve H Steve@ycplastics.co.uk on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 11:51:11

Don't start me off!

Dormant Bish on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 10:10:20

I'm very camp.

John Inman on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 09:58:32

No excuses from you boys, I'm camping...

jo (dreamer) on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 08:57:19

Pembrey: all night security on race weekends, so you should be able to get in late. Showers are available.... if they remember to unlock the building. Temperature is a bit variable in my experience! I will be camping - in the back of my Mondeo :)

Classic Grad Cage for sale here

JamesR on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 22:31:09

Anybody know what time the gates are likely to stay open to at Pembrey on Fri night ? Also what are the facilites like (hot showers ?). I won't be travelling down until late Fri and also weighing up whether to be a tough guy and camp. Thanks!

Justin on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 21:42:13

Coincidentally, I've just got my extinguisher bottle back from Lifeline today... They DO completely discharge and refill the bottle and guarantee that it's in working order. Granted, it's a bit more expensive than getting it weighed, but I know what I'd prefer if I hit the wall with a full tank of fuel..! Out of interest, Lifeline now stipulate that the bottles are only good for TEN years - after which they'll no longer service them.

JOS on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 20:05:32

Extinguishers, more:
The key thing that we should all check before we get to a circuit is that the extinguisher "pull" is functioning, because the cables can "seize", through non-use. Just put the pin in, and pull. The "trigger" should move!! If not, get a new cable!

NF on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 20:00:55

Extinguisher "servicing":
To my knowledge, our cars' extinguishers have only ever been checked to ensure that they have an "in-date" service sticker, even at Spa, and I don't expect that to change. A "service" does seem to be little more than a weight check, but every so often (two years, three years?) any reputable extinguisher service company will routinely empty it and re-charge it.

NF chair on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 19:56:16

You can download the "FIA Standard for Plumbed-in Fire Extinguisher Systems in Competition Cars", or as they prefer to say Norme FIA des Systèmes d'Extinction plombés embarqués dans les Voitures de Course. May not do you much good, though.

Roger on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 17:04:23

You should take it to Lifeline. They don't just weigh it.

Charles on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 16:57:40

The concept of servicing fire extinguishers is rather odd. If we took a car to Andy Mac for a service and he just weighed it we would be horrified but that is all they do to a fire extinguisher to make it "in date". I cannot see how that gives any guarantee that it will work when you need it most.

JP on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 16:45:38

As I understand it, somewhere like Spa will insist on the extinguisher being FIA approved - which Lifeline extinguishers are. In order to maintain this approval, the unit must be serviced by a Lifeline approved agent.
The MSA is a little less stringent and only requires that extinguishers be operational and doesn't care who services them so long as you have confidence they will work should you ever have to pull that little red handle.
That's my interpretation. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Extinguishers:
Last year Charles wrote:
..blah blah, only LIFELINE may service LIFELINE extinguishers.....(Graeme has the datails on why).
Charles on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 21:16:58

So I have to take my fire extinguisher to Lifeline to have it serviced; or can i get someone more local to service it?
If so why?...Graeme?

Don't forget that the clocks go forward on Sunday 28th March.

Speaking Clock on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 14:47:19

Last weekend's marshal training, Thruxton:
Six grads drivers joined Sheila and I over the weekend to help provide some "scenarios" to assist in BARC's annual HQ marshal training sessions.  On Saturday, we were joined by Roger Ford and the father and son novice drivers pairing of Martyn and Duncan Lewis and another new diver, John Wake (in the ex-bishmobile).  On Sunday, the Lewises turned up again and we were also joined by Richard Ormson and Terry Palmer.  On behalf of all the marshals, many thanks to all of them.  But especially to Terry who had got up at 6am to make the trip all the way from Felixstowe.  In his Caterham!  Despite temperatures several degrees the wrong side of zero!  It gets worse: Terry's radiator mysteriously sprung a leak and he made the return journey on an AA breakdown truck, in just six hours...!  (Or had he punctured the rad himself, to get a warm ride home...?)

John and Roger had also made the effort to bring Caterhams, as did Duncan on the Sunday; the rest of us had nice warm saloon cars!  Although the weather did stay dry all weekend, there was a somewhat chilly breeze.  The scenarios were all quite basic: on Saturday, we were mostly "traffic", repeatedly driving past a staged incident to add some "realism" while a couple of us took it in turns to pretend to be injured drivers, or in the Lewises' case, fighting drivers!  On Sunday, we did a bit more of that, but with slightly more "exciting" incidents, such as a squashed marshal, since we were dealing with more experienced marshals.  And we also helped the marshals to practice getting cars in and out of Assembly, gridding up and pit-stops.

All very enjoyable - thanks again to all concerned!

Cheeky b*gger. I actually get additional SAGA discount as it happens....

So did they charge you extra Paul? :-)

JP on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 22:00:43

If you book the Stradey for Pembrey, tell them you are racing at the Trac, they give all racers a good discounted rate.....

Paul Manyweathers (Stormer) pmanyweath@aol.com on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 18:54:40

Ho hum, must try refreshing the page occasionally. And I spelled Northwich wrong.

Roger on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 14:55:40

Premier Inn, Northwhich (Sandiway) for Oulton. Attached to the Blue Cap Inn which very good. Never found anywhere decent (and cheap) near Pembrey.

Roger on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 14:53:41

Doh! If only lawyers worked that quick when you are paying them!

JP on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 14:36:22

Pembrey: Stradey Park /b Oulton: Premier Inn at Northwich (Sandiway)

JP on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 14:35:25

Pembrey = Stradey Park Hotel Llanelli. Croft = Croft Spa Hotel (or the Travelodge on A1 South at Scotch Corner for the first night as you will be knackered after driving a million miles to the Far North). Oulton = Premier Inn, Sandiway Northwich next to the Blue Cap pub. Not the Ritz - but many of us stay at these places...

Martin Amison mamison@trowers.com on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 14:33:34

For the benefit of our new members, will someone please recommend hotels near Oulton, Pembrey and Croft?

Nick F chair on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 14:14:47

Only for just over a week Roger. Do keep up.

Mad March Hare on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 12:37:15

Blimey, is it March already?

Roger on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 12:12:25

I don't mind if it makes an appearance next month as most of us are racing there this month Roger - have fun there on your own next month won't you

JP on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 11:38:22

We saved you some winter, JP - it'll make an appearance at Pembrey next month.

Roger on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 11:04:17

Its funny, I don't seem to remember much of a winter at all. Not sure why.

JP on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 10:17:17

Now that makes the season seem close

JP on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 10:16:05

Pembrey closing date - TODAY!

Roger on Monday, March 08, 2010 at 08:08:27

The point is just to make sure you don't improve the aerodynamics by messing with the plates. Aesthetics are up to you. (I'm still working on a rear numberplate / diffuser design)

Andiih on Sunday, March 07, 2010 at 18:43:45

thanks guys, thats how I read it, but just wanted to check.

James B on Sunday, March 07, 2010 at 11:55:45

The regs say "Front number plates must be fitted vertically and self adhesive plates are not permitted. Standard UK number plates measuring approximately 525mm x 110mm must be fitted for racing and practice although these do not need to display the registration number of the vehicle.". So as far as racing is concerned, you just need a front plate of the right size and shape - it can display anything you like (names or sponsors' logos are common). Since I use my car on the road, I have standard UK plates and attach "show" plates with velcro / dual lock which have my name on them. That way it's easy to swap between the two, though I admit more than once I've accidently driven on the road with my race plates fitted.

Roger on Sunday, March 07, 2010 at 11:38:40

I've seen all sorts on number plates including standard letters, vinyl letters in various fonts, stickers and more. The regs say the PLATES have to be standard size, but they don't say they have to be legal for road use. However, for legal reasons, it's your risk :-)

Bunter on Sunday, March 07, 2010 at 11:31:36

Number Plates: I am just getting some number plates made up, and see they have to be standard Number plate size, but does anyone know about the letters/numbers, do these need to be UK standard size or can show plates be used?

James B on Sunday, March 07, 2010 at 11:15:29

Classic Half-Shafts: Having had my Rakeway half-shafts fitted by MMM (big thank you to AndyMac and team, especially Kevin who fitted them on Thursday), I was able to try them out in earnest at Pembrey today. What a difference they have made! The car felt more stable and balanced, especially over the curbs. Even the serated ones that Pembrey are keen on. I normally stay well clear of curbs but today I had the confidence to attack them a bit more and managed to beat my previous best by... (well thats for me to know....:-). I must confess that I did check the half-shafts a few times by jacking up the rear (no Bish!) and giving them a good tug but there was absolutely no play at all. One thing though, Andy suggested that after a few laps it would be wise to check the wheel nuts while everything beds in. This I did and a couple needed a bit of a tweek (I said no Bish!). So I would recommend that all Classics do this the first time out before they potentially end up with a three wheeler. Overall conclusion is that they are well worth it. Roll on Pembrey.

New drivers for 2010: All drivers who are new to the club should have received an email last night from my email account coyote_x_11@hotmail.com. If you are new to the club and didn't receive it, check your junk/spam folders in the first instance and add me to your safe senders list (assuming you want to receive these emails!). And let me know if you still can't find it.

If any returning drivers from past years still want to receive the new drivers' emails in 2010, just drop me a line and I'll add you to the distribution.
